Written on March 5, 2008
Most women will not forget to dab a few drops of their favorite scent before stepping out the house, whether it is for work or play. Besides the perfume and scents, the beautiful bottles holding these treasured contents have also found special places in women’s hearts. In fact, collection of antique perfume bottles has become a fashion of the time. Unique perfume bottles, especially the limited edition ones, could cost several times over the perfumes and scents.
Several pieces of evidence uncovered by archeologists seem to suggest that perfume and scented oils were very much a part of Egyptians’ culture as early as some 3,500 years ago. To hold their perfume, the Egyptians used vessels made of gold, terra-cotta or glass and in a variety of shapes and forms. Although many earlier perfume bottles are nondescript, some are true works of art, like the ones that were found in the tomb of Tutanhaamon and now displayed at the Museum of the Cairo.
Manufacturers began using glass to create perfume bottles only around 1500 B.C. A glass perfume bottle was highly prized during that time because they were reserved for the wealthy. After the use of perfume became widespread in Rome, Greece and other parts of Europe, a greater variety of perfume bottles were created. In the 16th century, the first glass perfume bottles were made in England. A century later, the Murano glassblowers further perfected the art. Finally in the middle of the 1700s, the glass perfume bottles arrived in America from England.
The shapes and sizes of perfume bottles underwent significant evolution in the 18th and 19th centuries. Besides a myriad of styles and colors, designers also experimented with figures and shapes to add artistic values to the perfume bottles. A perfume bottle which resembled the Liberty Bell was even created in 1876! Collectors began to group antique perfume bottles by styles in the 1900s. You may come across the Art Nouveau (shimmering colors), Art Deco, Victorian, Steuban and Imperial styles and designs.
With the extensive variety of shapes, styles and cuts available, you will be spoilt for choice when picking that ideal antique perfume bottle to augment your collection. Just bear in mind that there is some uniqueness in the bottles created during a specific period. For instance, hand painted scenery were popular designs for perfume bottles created during the Edwardian era. As for those made in the Victorian era, gold was often used. In fact, because such perfume bottles were so exquisite, it was fashionable to use them as a jewelry piece or decoration in the 1880s.
Collecting antique perfume bottles as a hobby can be both educational and rewarding. Look out for tips or guides on how to buy the right perfume bottles and you will be ready to start your own collection!
